It was founded in <\/span><\/span><\/strong>1966<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> in <\/span><\/span><\/strong>New York City<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> by <\/span><\/span><\/strong>A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>. Its core beliefs are based on traditional Hindu scriptures such as the \u015arÄ?mad BhÄ?gavatam<\/span><\/a><\/em> and the Bhagavad-gÄ?tÄ?<\/span><\/a><\/em>,<\/span> both of which, according to traditional Hindu view, date back more than 5,000 years. The distinctive appearance of the movement and its culture come from the <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Gaudiya Vaishnava<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> tradition, which has had adherents in India since the late <\/span><\/span><\/strong>1400s<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> and Western <\/span><\/span><\/strong>converts<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> since the early <\/span><\/span><\/strong>1930s<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Non-sectarian<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> in its ideals, ISKCON was formed to spread the practice of bhakti yoga (devotion to <\/span><\/span><\/strong>God<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>), in which aspirant devotees (bhaktas<\/em>) dedicate their thoughts and actions towards pleasing the Supreme Lord, <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Krishna<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> (seen as non-different from <\/span><\/span><\/strong>God<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>). ISKCON today is a worldwide confederation of more than 400 centres, including 60 farm communities, some aiming for self-sufficiency, 50 schools and 90 restaurants. In recent decades the movement’s most rapid expansions in terms of numbers of membership have been within <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Eastern Europe<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> (especially since the collapse of the USSR) and <\/span><\/span><\/strong>India<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>.
