Desmond Mpilo Tutu<\/strong> (born 7 October 1931) is a South African activist and retired\u00a0Anglican<\/a> bishop who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of\u00a0apartheid<\/a>. He was the first black South African\u00a0Archbishop of Cape Town<\/a>, South Africa and\u00a0primate<\/a> of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa (now the\u00a0Anglican Church of Southern Africa<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Tutu has been active in the defence of human rights and uses his high profile to campaign for the oppressed. He has campaigned to fight AIDS,\u00a0tuberculosis<\/a>,\u00a0homophobia<\/a>,\u00a0transphobia<\/a>, poverty and racism. Tutu received the\u00a0Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> in 1984, the\u00a0Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism<\/a> in 1986, the\u00a0Pacem in Terris Award<\/a> in 1987, the\u00a0Sydney Peace Prize<\/a> in 1999, the\u00a0Gandhi Peace Prize<\/a> in 2005 <\/span>and the\u00a0Presidential Medal of Freedom<\/a> in 2009. Tutu has also compiled several books of his speeches and sayings.<\/p>\n
