The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), known informally as the Biodiversity Convention, is an international legally binding treaty<\/a>. The Convention has three main goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>;<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. sustainable use of its components; and<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In other words, its objective is to develop national strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. It is often seen as the key document regarding sustainable development<\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/span> http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convention_on_Biological_Diversity<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    As 193 member states will descend on India Oct. 8-19 for high-level talks on Biodiversity (COP 11 CBD), Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, talked to IPS' about what's at stake.<\/strong><\/pre>\n
