In its 20 years of existence, the ICTY has irreversibly changed the landscape of international humanitarian law and provided victims an opportunity to voice the horrors they witnessed and experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ICTY\u2019s twenty years of operations have been marked by a number of achievements. Among these are indicting 161 individuals, including senior political and military leaders, accused of being responsible for serious crimes committed during conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, all ICTY indictees have been accounted for, demonstrating the international community\u2019s commitment to international justice. In case after case, the Tribunal has made findings about particular crimes, based upon the testimony of those who witnessed and survived these crimes and other evidence. And in determining the individual criminal responsibility of those tried by the Tribunal, the ICTY has issued judgements and decisions that have helped delineate key norms of international criminal law.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, over the past twenty years, the Tribunal has both served as a model for other international courts and supported efforts by States in the former Yugoslavia to develop domestic legal structures able to try serious violations of international criminal law.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The event was held in the presence of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander. Among the speakers at the event was Judge Theodor Meron, President of the ICTY and Patricia O’Brien, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
