Die Geschichte des Heiligtums reicht etwa 2000 Jahre zur&#252;ck, womit er einer der &#228;ltesten Tempel S&#252;dindiens ist. In Tamil Nadu gilt der Nataraja Tempel als der Tempel; wenn also von dem Tempel gesprochen wird, ist jener in Chidambaram gemeint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify; FONT-FAMILY: \"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify; FONT-FAMILY: \"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Geweiht ist er Shiva in seiner Erscheinungsform als Nataraja, als tanzender Gott, der in seinem Tanz die Welt neu erschafft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify; FONT-FAMILY: \"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Das Tempelareal erstreckt sich auf einer Fl&#228;che von rund 16 km\u00b2. Vier &#252;ber 40 Meter hohe Gopurams (Tor-T&#252;rme) bilden die Zug&#228;nge, von denen der Nordturm mit 42,4 m der h&#246;chste ist. In Erinnerung daran, dass die vier bedeutendsten Heiligen des Shivaismus (siehe auch Yoga und Yoga Heilige) der ersten H&#228;lfte des ersten Jahrtausends an diesem Ort lebten und wirkten, wurden ihre Abbilder an den Gopurams angebracht: Sambandar im S&#252;den, Appar im Westen, Sundarar im Norden und Manikkavacakar im Osten. An der Fassade des &#246;stlichen Gopuram sind 108 Darstellungen von Gesten des Bharatanatyam-Tanzes zu sehen, dem in diesem, dem tanzenden Shiva geweihten Ort eine besondere Bedeutung zukommt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify; FONT-FAMILY: \"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Im Inneren Tempelgel&#228;nde, das in f&#252;nf gro&#223;e H&#246;fe gegliedert ist, befinden sich der Sivakamiamman-Tempel, das Sivaganga-Wasserbecken, die \u201eHalle der tausend S&#228;ulen\u201c (tats&#228;chlich sind es 999) und das zentrale Heiligtum.
