The Syrian Regime continues to ignore international human rights standards and violate international humanitarian law. In addition, the Syrian authorities continue the cruel arbitrary detention of innocent civilians, leading to overcrowding and very poor conditions. Such conditions don’t take into account the most basic human rights.  As a result, a number of female prisoners, all detained at the filing section in Adra Central Prison in the Capital Damascus, decided to begin a hunger strike on Monday July 1, 2013 as a form of protest for being detained for such a long time in the worst condition, without ever appearing before any judicial body.

The female prisoners are between the ages of 19 and 60 years old. Among them are those with cancer and chronic diseases and others who are pregnant.

The female prisoners sent a letter to the Head Prosecutor of the Terrorism Court seeking consideration of their situation and requesting expedition of their appearance before competent courts

The Damascus Center for Human Rights Studies declares full solidarity with the female prisoners conducting the hunger strike in Adra Prison. DCHRS holds the Syrian Government and the prison staff responsible for the safety of the prisoners. DCHRS requests that the public prosecutor of terrorism listen to the demands of the prisoners. DCHRS demands that human rights organizations be granted access to the prison in order to check on the conditions of all prisoners, particularly these hunger strikers.
