MEMORIES OF BAKU. Published by Marquand Books. Edited by Nicolas V. Iljine. Text by Farid Alakbarli, Fuad Akhundov, Farah Aliyeva, Jahangir Selimkhanov, Tadeusz Swietochowski. Memories of Baku is the visual retelling of the rich history of the capital of Azerbaijan and the country’s rise to power as one of the largest oil producing nations in the world. This publication showcases the unique socio-economic cultural and political situation of Baku in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, presented alongside aspects of Baku culture in the forms of architecture, music, theater and the visual arts. Embellished with photographs, advertisements and postcard views of the once-opulent city, Memories of Baku reaches beyond the classical stereotypes of Azerbaijan as „the land of fire,“ focusing instead on what are considered the more formative elements of Baku’s community. The postcard illustrations included in this collection are derived from the personal collection of editor Nicolas V. Iljine, who has developed a passion for discovering and sharing these impressions of an antiquated city with the public.

In an interview with R+ expert on Eastern medicine, doctor of science in history and PhD in biology Farid Alakbarli said that in the era of the Achaemenid Empire (the fourth to fifth centuries B.C.) watermelons were cultivated in Azerbaijan. Until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries watermelon was less popular than the melon in the Muslim East. In the Canon of Ibn Sina and in the Pharmacognosy of Al-Biruni watermelon is mentioned only in passing as the „Indian melon.“ Later the situation changed.Seventeenth-century author Mohammed al-Mu’min writes the following about the watermelon: „Watermelon is a choleretic and a diuretic; it quenches thirst.Watermelon juice with honey and ginger is an expectorant, and when combined with milk is a choleretic.“Muhammed Yusuf Sirvani [Shirvani] in Tibbnama (1712) wrote of the diuretic, choleretic, and thirst-quenching qualities of watermelon. „These succulent fruits quench the thirst and replenish minerals within the body,“ the work said. http://www.regionplus.az/en/articles/view/2603
(Text: arte)
