I have learned the number of people who are receiving de-extremism education at vocational training centers in Xinjiang. I am not authorized to disclose this figure. All I can say is that it is much fewer than “1 million or so” speculated by the outside world.
— Hu Xijin 胡锡进 (@HuXijin_GT) 15. Oktober 2018
What I find truly remarkable: that Xinjiang’s governor supposedly does not know the number of people in these training camps, but Global Times reporter Hu Xijin said a while ago he was told the figures, but XJ won’t disclose it because it would lead to misuse by Western media https://t.co/2gqRVdXMtu

Since China is apparently doing such a fantastic job, with Uyghurs dancing and feasting in voluntary camps, I just don’t understand why they didn’t show the camps to the world in summer ’17? Why they denied them through most of ’18? And only now shows them to journalists? Hmm… https://t.co/RaYBsxkvOu

„Kazinform correspondent voiced to the XUAR leaders a request to visit vocational and technical centers in the Ili-Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. The representatives of the party committee of the XUAR promised to see into this matter and organize in the future a press tour.“

„However, he [Xinjiang governor Shohrat Zakir] found it difficult to answer the question of the correspondent of Kazinform International News Agency about the exact number of vocational centers in the XUAR and the number of people held there.“
