For instance, accountants in Canada and real estate agents in Austria did not file any suspicious reports in the most recent year data was available.
The question remains, however, whether the world’s richest countries have the will to effectively address illicit flows at home, or whether they will continue to pass the buck waiting for other countries to show leadership.
The revenues lost by poor countries through tax dodging alone are estimated at US$ 160 billion every year, money which could be used to build thousands of schools and hospitals.

News Lens: World Bank helped fund controversial dam: Report https://t.co/jCMxu01CMp …The report, released last week by a team of rights groups, accuses the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank’s private lending arm, of secretly funding 91 projects across Asia—including three in Cambodia—causing “severe” environmental damage and human rights abuses in breach of its own standards. …
The hundreds of families living in the way of the 400-megawatt dam were not consulted before construction began and are being forced off their land in exchange for compensation that NGOs believe is under market value.
Hundreds of families have taken the deal and moved, the alternative being nothing at all. Sarun Sokhom’s family is one of about 100 still refusing to budge.
…
“Our ancestors are buried here and their spirits live here,” she said. “If they force us to leave, it’s like they force us to die. We cannot accept it.”
….
Ms. Sokhom said the World Bank Group was as responsible as the companies building the dam.
The new report also uncovers the IFC’s $15 million stake in the Vietnam Investment Fund II, its $2 million stake in the Dragon Capital Group and its $3 million stake in Sacombank.
….
In Ratanakkiri, the report links the IFC to a gold mine concession overlapping the land of hundreds of families who were not consulted beforehand, as required by law, and fear losing their homes without fair compensation.
….
The IFC has lent $45 million to Kotak Mahindra Bank, which has lent $2.26 million to Mesco, the mine’s Indian co-owner.
