Es wird heute eine Familie mit 3 Kindern und ein Jugendlicher aus Afghanistan und 3 weitere Opfer aus Syrien bestattet.

War es ein historischer Moment, als am Westbahnhof der erste Zug aus Ungarn mit Flüchtlingen einfuhr, als Applaus aufbrandete und sich Menschen in die Arme fielen? War es der unumkehrbare Fall der „Festung“ oder nur eine Episode im Rückzugsgefecht der europäischen Abschottungsfront. Wahrscheinlich wird es noch vieler Kämpfe bedürfen und, ja, es wird an den Außengrenzen der EU noch viele Tote geben, bis sich Menschen frei bewegen können werden. Aber die letzten Wochen und Monate haben gezeigt, dass sich die politischen Kräfteverhältnisse geändert haben, wenn es um die Frage des Schutzes von Kriegsflüchtlingen, Verfolgten und Vertriebenen geht.
Tausende Menschen in ganz Österreich helfen nicht nur Flüchtlingen, sie haben sich auch in Initiativen organisiert, haben vorgezeigt, dass „wir es gemeinsam schaffen“ in einer Situation wo die eigentlich zuständigen Behörden versagt haben (oder bewusst auf Eskalation setzten – man weiß nicht was ärger wäre). Diese Initiativen sind aber nicht nur Agenturen der Hilfsbereitschaft, sie sind auch Teil einer mächtigen politischen Bewegung.
Gezeigt haben das auch die beiden Demonstrationen in Wien (und auch jene in den Landeshauptstädten) bei denen es zum ersten Mal seit zwanzig Jahren gelungen ist mehr als die „üblichen Verdächtigen“ auf die Straße zu bringen. Und auch die 120.000 am Heldenplatz wurden weniger parteipolitisch instrumentalisiert als dazumal das „Lichtermeer“.
Die SPÖ spricht nämlich erstmals in der Flüchtlingsfrage nicht mit zwei Stimmen (wobei jene, die unentwegt von den „berechtigten Ängsten“ sprach und damit institutionellen Rassismus rechtfertigte, stets die lautere und wirkmächtigere war) sondern machte auch und besonders im Wiener Wahlkampf klar: Menschenrechte sind nicht verhandelbar, das Recht auf internationalen Schutz kennt keine Obergrenzen. Das jetzt die EU-Innenminister wieder und ausschließlich über konzertierte Abwehrmaßnahmen verhandeln und Österreich besonders gelobt wird, weil es 100 „Experten“ an die Frontex-Front schicken will, ist Teil des Rollback, der zu erwarten war. Der Fall der Festung Europa ist also keine „gmate Wiesn“.
Wir haben im ersten Teil dieser Nummer der asyl aktuell verschiedene Stimmen der engagierten Zivilgesellschaft dokumentiert. Wir bedanken uns bei all denen, die uns den Abdruck ihrer Texte und Bilder erlaubt haben und entschuldigen uns bei jenen, die nicht zu Wort kommen (die nächste Nummer ist allerdings schon in Planung). Auch das ein Zeichen der Solidarität innerhalb der Bewegung als deren Teil wir uns bei der asylkoordination verstehen, auch wenn wir kaum an den Bahnhöfen oder Grenzen zu finden sind, sondern in erster Linie am Telfon, in Schulen, Gemeinde- oder Hörsälen.

They really thought that now they would have a chance to develop the country peacefully. They had sincerely hoped that the armistice agreements would grow into peace agreements.
