[Speaker’s bio]:

Rose Tang is a New York-based Chinese human rights new media activist, artist and a survivor of the Tiananmen Massacre. The U.S. Visual Artists Guild awarded Tang “Champion for Freedom of Speech” in 2014. She’s taught journalism at Princeton University. During her 12 years as a journalist, Tang has worked for English-language main stream media organizations, including CNN and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and has won numerous media awards in New York, Hong Kong and Australia. The Society for Publishers Asia named her “Journalist of the Year” in 2005. The Chinese Communist Party mouth piece branded her “Unemployed Housewife of Brooklyn” in 2014. Tang’s current focus is to improve human rights in China, Hong Kong, and Tibet.

Shortly after the Chinese Communist Party began the mass arrest and persecution of human rights lawyers in early July, Rose Tang used the Internet to initiate global actions to support the lawyers. She also organized the boycott of Beijing’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics. She has interviewed ex-President of Taiwan Chen Shui-Bian, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou, and veteran pro-democracy activist and former legislator Shih Ming-Teh.

Tang has been using social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Telegram for her activism. She’s the editor of a number of Facebook public pages, such as “Free Liu-Xiaobo.” She founded “Rebel Fashion with a Cause,” encouraging people to wear traditional Tibetan clothes and accessaries to raise awareness of Tibet. In September 2014, Tang was given a private audience by the 14th Dalai Lama in his residence in Dharamsala, India. She also met with the speaker and deputy speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Media of the Central Tibetan Administration. The Tibetan Youth Congress, the largest NGO in exile Tibetan community, invited Tang to give a speech in New Delhi and a public talk in Dharamsala.

Tang flew to Hong Kong last December to camp with protesters to support the Umbrella Revolution. Shortly after the police drove her and other protesters out of the Umbrella Square, she flew to Taipei to meet with leaders and participants of the Sunflower Movement and gave public talks to members of Island Nation Youth, Democratic Tautin and other NGOs. During recent years, Tang gave speeches and talks at protest rallies in Chicago, San Francisco, New York and Rochester, She was part of a panel on China’s social media and activism organized by the New York-based Overseas Press Club.

[Outlines of the Talk]

Rose Tang, this week’s speaker at Cafe Philo @ NY, has long been involved in struggles to improve human rights. Tang will share with us her experience of participating in the Tiananmen Movement and her dramatic escape from Tiananmen Massacre as a student protester. She’ll talk about the Chinese Communist Party’s cover-up of this historic landmark for the last 26 years and the efforts by the Chinese people to keep the memories alive and to carry on the ideals of the Tiananmen Generation. Tang will tell us how ordinary people, activists and human rights lawyers in China, including those currently in detention or in exile, have been inspired by the spirit of Tiananmen and how they have managed to openly commemorate anniversaries of the massacre inside China.

As a veteran journalist, Rose Tang will discuss how to use a cell phone or a computer to maximize the power of social media and constantly invent methods of fighting against tyranny. The human rights situation in China continues to worsen, and Chinese President Xi Jinping has been cracking down on civil society on an unprecedented scale. Since July 9th, more than 260 human rights lawyers, activists, their colleagues, and family members have been arrested, interrogated, put under house arrest or made to disappear.

Under such Red Terror, Tang uses the Internet to share information and contact activists and lawyers inside China. Within a day of the beginning of the crackdown in July, she formed a team of activists, journalists, lawyers, artists, and students around the world to leap into action. Every team member had specific job assignments. The team organized simultaneous protests in a number of cities and regions around the world. The team also provided information to international media, helping journalists to cover the protests and the boycott of Beijing’s Olympic bid. The coverage on social media and mainstream media prompted various governments and international lawyers’ and human rights organizations around the world to issue statements protesting China’s persecution of the lawyers and the recent unprecedented human rights violations.

In the talk, Tang will stress the importance of fighting against the Chinese Communist Party dictatorship, and how this fight is connected with the freedom, democracy and independence of Hong Kong and Taiwan.
