“There are over 16,000 nuclear weapons in the world today. As the recent 3rd International Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons concluded: the impact of the use of just one is unacceptable. A mere 100 would lower the earth’s temperature by over 1 degree Celsius for at least ten years, causing massive disruption of global food production and putting 2 billion people at risk of starvation. If we fail to prevent nuclear war, all of our other efforts to secure peace and justice will be for naught.  We need to stigmatize, prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons.

“Meeting in Rome, we commend Pope Francis’ recent call for nuclear weapons to be “banned once and for all”. We welcome the pledge by the Austrian government “to identify and pursue effective measures to fill the legal gap for the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons” and “to cooperate with all stakeholders to achieve this goal”.

“We urge all states to commence negotiations on a treaty to ban nuclear weapons at the earliest possible time, and subsequently to conclude the negotiations within two years. This will fulfill existing obligations enshrined in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which will be reviewed in May of 2015, and the unanimous ruling of the International Court of Justice.  Negotiations should be open to all states and blockable by none. The 70th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 2015 highlights the urgency of ending the threat of these weapons.”

Das erste Mal in Europa kam der Lehm laut Überlieferungen in Russland an. Dort sollen vor rund 10.000 Jahren die ersten Bauten entstanden sein. In Österreich fand man zahlreiche alte Bauten, die aus Lehm bestehen. Viele von ihnen werden auf ein Alter von 5.000-6.000 Jahre geschätzt.

On Tuesday December 9th the ERRC held a side event in the European Parliament for MEPs, on Roma in Europe, and on how MEPs can use their platform to help advance the cause of Roma Rights. We encouraged MEPs to use their position to press for infringement proceedings against member states which violate the Racial Equality Directive, and also to ensure that EU institutions do everything in their power to stop violations of the rights of Roma. The event was hosted by MEP Lynn Boylan and organised in conjunction with the Sinn Féin office in Brussels, and the Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left. The ERRC presented our work on combating violations of the rights of EU Roma citizens. We focussed in particular on housing and education in the Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Italy and Romania. The event was attended by MEPs, assistants, and representatives of the Commission. The ERRC would like to thank MEP Lynn Boylan, the Sinn Féin office in Brussels, and the GUE/NGL Group for their support in organising this event. Domari refugees in Turkey: ‘Peace, bread and toilets’

In this update on the current situation of Domari refugees, ERRC Programmes Director Stephan Muller reports back from ERRC’s most recent field trip to Turkey, and ponders what prospects the future might hold for them should the Syrian war come to an end. Staff met many refugees who face constant police raids, but have received no humanitarian assistance in three years. The health and hygiene situation in most of these camps is catastrophic. One Abdal refugee who has lived for more than two years in makeshift camps cried his three wishes to the sky: “Bread, peace and toilets”.
