On Saturday, May 18th, we are holding a Film Night from the Archives!
We will be showing a duet performance with Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar, accompanied on tabla by Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain, from a concert that took place on February 7th, 1983 in Bombay. The concert is 3 1/2 hours long and features ragas Puriya Kalyan and Zila Kafi.
Our film nights are FREE, so please bring your friends and some snacks and enjoy an incredible concert from the past!

ARTICLE 19 (whose name is normally written in upper case letters) is a London-based human rights organization with a specific mandate and focus on the defense and promotion of freedom of expression and freedom of information worldwide founded in 1987.[1] The organization takes its name from Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:
“ Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; the right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers.”

The lawsuit, Kiobel v Royal Dutch Petroleum (Shell), was brought in 2002 by 12 Nigerians who allege that the company “aided and abetted” the human rights violations committed against them by the Nigerian Government in the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta. Shell, through a Nigerian subsidiary, was involved in oil exploration and production in the region between 1992 and 1995, at the time the abuses allegedly occurred.
This case is one of several brought against Shell in relation to the violent suppression of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni people, a group campaigning for the rights of local people and protesting against pollution caused by oil companies. Nine of the Movement’s members, including its leader, well-known writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, were hanged in 1995 after being convicted of murder by a military tribunal. The executions of the ‘Ogoni nine’, as they are known globally, were condemned by governments and human rights activists around the world.
Since the Second World War and the Nuremberg war crimes trials, international law has held that human rights abuses can be prosecuted around the globe. A motion to have the original case dismissed on the grounds that it could more conveniently be heard in England was overturned, with the Court of Appeals ruling the United States was a proper forum because the defendants had an office in New York.

OIC calls for end to anti-Muslim campaign

The Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has called on the Myanmar government to put an end to the campaigns of hatred being waged against Muslims in the country.

Speaking at OIC headquarters in the Saudi Arabian port of Jeddah on Saturday, March 30, Prof. Ihsanoglu also addressed a message to Muslims in Myanmar, telling them the OIC “would champion their cause”, and stressing that the Organisation and its member states will follow up the issue and stand ready to take all necessary measures to address it.
A meeting of the OIC’s Contact group was called in response to the communal violence that erupted in central Myanmar following an otherwise innocuous incident at a gold shop in Meiktila on March 20.
“These acts of violence have killed scores of Muslims, burned their homes, and left hundreds of them homeless, in addition to the burning of mosques and schools,” the IOC Secretary-General said.
A Times of India report said that the IOC will reconvene to discuss the issue of Myanmar on April 14.
With 57 member states, the IOC is the second largest inter-governmental organization in the world after the United Nations.
In October, the Myanmar government rejected plans by the OIC to open an office in Myanmar after Buddhist monks led protests against the bloc’s involvement.
