We meet on Tuesday, 20 June at 17.00 at Platz der Menschenrechte near the Marcus Omofuma memorial (Marcus was murdered by three policemen during a deportation in 1999).

„Die Kriegsgräber sind die großen Prediger des Friedens“ sagte Albert Schweitzer. Dieser Wahrheit wird sich kaum jemand verschließen können, der Kriegsgräberstätten besucht. Martin Schulz, langjähriger Präsident des EU-Parlaments besuchte mit einer Gruppe Jugendlicher die Kriegsgräberstätte in Verdun. Dort betonte er – eindrücklich gerade angesichts der endlosen Kreuzreihen – den Wert jedes einzelnen Lebens. Um den müsse jeder wissen, der Verantwortung für Menschen übernehmen wolle.
Martin Schulz wies auch auf den Sinn der Kriegsgräberstätten hin, in denen der Toten gedacht wird. „Wir geben denen, die ihrer Würde beraubt wurden, weil sie zu Menschenmaterial gemacht wurden, ein Stück davon zurück“ erklärte er. Darin sieht auch der Volksbund seine Aufgabe. Erinnern, gedenken – und aus der Katastrophe für die Zukunft lernen.
„Wenn wir Europa nicht hätten, was uns verbindet, hätten wir nur Dinge, die uns trennen.“ Mit diesen Worten formulierte eine junge Besucherin die Notwendigkeit, für ein gemeinsames Europa zu kämpfen.
Vor wenigen Wochen gedachten wir dem 72. Jahrestag des Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Noch immer birgt der Volksbund Kriegstote – aus dem Zweiten und aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Dies übernimmt er auch unter schwierigen politischen Bedingungen. So war der Dank von Kanzlerin Angela Merkel an Staatschef Wladimir Putin, dass der Volksbund seiner Aufgabe auch in den Ländern der russischen Föderation weiter nachkommen dürfe, einer der wenigen milderen Momente in der frostigen Atmosphäre beim Treffen in Sotchi.
Der Volksbund wurde als bürgerliche Initiative 1919 gegründet. Wir sind mit unseren Traditionen der Kriegsgräberpflege und Angehörigenbetreuung eng verbunden, gleichzeitig bieten wir internationale friedenspädagogische Jugendarbeit an und verstehen uns als gesellschaftspolitischen Akteur für Frieden und Zusammenarbeit in Europa.
