In Europe #Roma are more likely to live in #poverty than any other group, which is a result of their social, political and economic #exclusion and the #discrimination they face on a daily basis. According to a UNDP / FRA survey from 2011, about 90% of Roma surveyed live in households below national poverty lines.
Eradication of Roma poverty is impossible without the elimination of the systemic ethnic discrimination that hinders them in accessing quality education, housing, employment and health care.

“The positive thing of this municipality is that you can talk to the councillors, they agree to meet you. They listen to you but then they do not do anything. For three years Roma and NGOs have been meeting with the municipal authorities, but nothing has changed. Look at this camp! All of Milan’s formal camps are abandoned, conditions worsened over these years.”

The recently elected Feminist Party MEP and lifelong Romani activist, Soraya Post spoke to Bernard Rorke about rejuvenating representative democracy, defending the rights of women, and plans to create a European parliamentary intergroup to combat anti-Gypsyism.
Bernard Rorke: Congratulations on being the first Feminist party candidate and one of only two Romani MEPs to be elected to the new European Parliament. I read something very interesting about your grass roots election campaign of ‚house meetings‘ – could you tell us about that? Do you think there are lessons to be learned to increase Roma participation in political life?

ERRC congratulates courageous Malala on Nobel Peace Prize. ERRC shares the same vision that Malala campaigns for: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanRomaRightsCentre …
Similar to girls in Pakistan that #Malala campaign for #Romani girls across Europe face discrimination in education
17 years-old Pakistani activist for girl’s education #Malala Yousafzai has become the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious #Nobel Prize. Malala shared the award with Kailash #Satyarthi, an Indian child rights campaigner. The Nobel Committee praised the pair’s „struggle against the suppression of children and young people“. In October 2012, the Taliban attempted to kill Malala for her activities in demanding the right to education for girls in her country and elsewhere.
The ERRC congratulates courageous Malala on the Award. The ERRC proudly shares the same vision that Malala campaigns for: All children have the right to quality education without facing any discrimination. Access to quality education in an environment free from all racial, gender-based or ethnic prejudices is a fundamental key for creating a fair and just word.
However, similar to girls in Pakistan that Malala campaign for, #Romani girls across Europe also face discrimination in accessing education. The ERRC fights to ensure equal access to education for Romani girls; see our recent submission to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (#CEDAW) Committee on this issue: http://www.errc.org/article/errc-submission-to-un-cedaw-committee-to-the-general-recommendation-on-girlswomens-right-to-education-july-2014/4324
We also would like to thank the Nobel Committee for awarding two children’s rights activists this year. We believe this will also help to raise awareness on this crucial matter globally.
