ERRC victory: Romani boys denied enrolment in school win case in Czech Republic!

…

Some Roma people tried to negotiate with Deputy Police Prefect M. Yann Drouet to make the authorities respect the deadline given by the court. The negotiations were fruitless and the Prefecture’s decision to evict them was final. Police officers then escorted the Roma back into the settlement to retrieve their personal belongings. Other officers blocked the entrances to the settlement to prevent families returning to their homes.

The families were allowed back into the settlement through one entry point manned by policemen, security guards and a dog. Only one member of each family was permitted to enter to retrieve their personal belongings. As a consequence families could only get their essentials: clothes, documents, medicines. People had to struggle to carry heavy loads for hundreds of meters as all the other entrances were blocked by police officers.

The murderer was found guilty and sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment, including three years of protective supervision including psychological treatment.

The applicants were unable to appeal against the sentence. With the ERRC’s support, they unsuccessfully complained to the Constitutional Court about various human rights violations resulting from flaws in the trial and in the sentence.

Italian court decision brings Europe one step closer to ending Romani statelessness

“The decision represents a great achievement.” – says ÄorÄe JovanoviÄ, President of the European Roma Rights Centre. – “From now on this judgment can be invoked before reluctant local authorities who refuse to recognise Italian nationality iure soli to Roma. The decision provides a clear precedent and is a small step in our efforts to end Roma statelessness in Europe.”

In this guest blog Andrew Ryder argues for collaborative and inclusive approaches to Roma research to ensure that community voices are heard and taken into account.

You can join the debate at Corvinus University on the 2nd of November. Event details below.

Relationships between researchers and the researched is one of the key dividing lines of debate within knowledge production, Romani Studies is no exception to this rule. For a significant period the discipline known as Romani Studies has been dominated by outsider researchers who, in the traditions of the Gipsy Lore Society, have valued narrow notions of objectivity and emphasised the importance of positivist distance from the researched, and the primacy of professional expertise. In a commodified research environment contracted and adlected expertise translates into academic prestige and status, in the process though it could be argued that in fact the academy has at times lost its critical objectivity producing tepid research which has failed to challenge and has filled a vacuum for policy makers who should have been more reliant on dialogue and engagement with actual Roma communities.

A lost decade? Reflections on Roma inclusion 2005-2015

As we move forward, and leave the Decade behind, the most that can be said is that there is a far deeper understanding of what is at stake, and what it will take to undo the damage done and fulfill the promises of democracy for all of Europe’s Roma citizens. – Read and share our latest blog from Bernard Rorke.

Letter from Roma and Sinti activists to Nobel Peace Prize laureates

Last December, 15 Roma and Sinti activists taking part in a 3-month training organised by the Associazione 21 Luglio and the ERRC in Rome received their diplomas. The training was aimed at building the capacities of Roma and Sinti young adults to advocate for the rights of their communities. Discrimination against these communities has greatly escalated in recent years, and a current political scandal unveiled the exploitation of Roma communities by the Mafia and corrupted politicians.

Proud and determined, the activists have already taken advantage of the skills they acquired during the course and taken steps to denounce the discrimination that Roma and Sinti communities face in Italy. On the occasion of the XIV World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, which was held in Rome on 12-14 December 2014, they met with 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Máiread Corrigan Maguire and 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi to pass on their message, a “call of fellowship, peace, and mutual respect aimed at building a better world”.

Protection from evictions and improving housing – the ERRC’s Ukrainian approach

Protection from evictions and improving housing – the ERRC’s Ukrainian approach

In some ‪#‎Roma‬ settlements in ‪#‎Ukraine‬ people sometimes live under threat of ‪#‎eviction‬ and in low standard accommodation. The ERRC has managed to legally register a condominium for four ‪#‎Romani‬ families in ‪#‎Uzhhorod‬, giving them official ownership of their homes. Not only does this protect the families from eviction or threat of eviction, but they can now apply for assistance to improve their dwellings (something many non-Roma in Uzhhorod have already done). Now other households are following the same procedure. Together with the ERRC, this Romani community is organising itself to fight for and defend their rights, and showing a way for Roma in Ukraine to use the law in their favour.

As Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Budapest nears, there is conflicting speculation about the purpose of her visit. Merkel will spend five hours in Budapest, apparently on February 2. This short stint will include a meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a visit to Magyarországi Zsidó Hitközségek Szövetsége, the umbrella organization representing the Jewish religious community.

In Hungary, the government’s Media Authority has the power to collect detailed information about journalists as well as advertising and editorial content. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s regime uses fines, taxes, and licensing to pressure critical media, and steers state advertising to friendly outlets. A comprehensive report by several global press freedom organizations concluded: “Hungary’s independent media today faces creeping strangulation.”

I spent some precious moments with school children in my Assembly Office.

It was really sweet to hear them sing, recite and share their stories and ambitions.

Such opportunity to spend time with children comes rarely.
