In the uncensored version of the documentary, a human trafficker is filmed explaining that passports of potential child brides are forged in Bangladesh and that “the trafficker will [then] pay money to clear [Malaysian] immigration.” In another scene that was subsequently censored, the Rohingya-refugee husband of a trafficked child-bride explains that Malaysian police routinely extort money from him during his daily commute to work, saying, “I pay the police 10 to 20 Ringgit all the time.”

The authorities also cut a scene from “Bou” showing Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak walking with other Government Ministers. The authorities verbally explained to Ms. Ramakrishnan that Prime Minister Najib had nothing to do with the subject of the film. Officials also verbally informed Ms. Ramakrishnan to cut an additional scene showing Ganesha, the Hindu elephant god.

The latest police investigation is understood to concern allegations that contracts were forged in order to move and launder money.

Appearing in court in the city of Rishon LeZion, Steinmetz complained that he was the victim of a “political war” that he claimed was being financed by the investor and philanthropist George Soros.

A spokesman for BSGR had no comment to make.

The other suspects include David Granot, the chief executive of the Israeli telecoms corporation Bezeq, and Tal Silberstein, a former consultant to the former Israeli premier Ehud Barak and to the Austrian chancellor, Christian Kern.

On Monday, Israeli police issued a statement that said those detained were suspected of having “acted together and methodically with the prime suspect in order to create and present fictitious contracts and deals … on a foreign country in order to transfer funds and launder money”.

„Privatverzug“ steigt

In My Opinion
One of the many troublesome trends existing in our societies is the elevation of issues that are basically political and even monetary, to the level of religious faith and practice. The current struggle, mainly in the media and not so much on the ground itself, regarding the installation of metal detectors on the Temple Mount, is an example of making a security and political issue into a matter of holy war and belief. It is ironic that the Saudis have been able to install such security measures in the heart of the great mosque of Mecca without apparently violating any religious principles of Islam. Yet, when Israel attempts to do so on the Temple Mount, after terrorists committed murder…

EU countries, including Italy, should increase safe and legal channels into the EU, including working with the UNHCR to resettle recognized refugees currently in Libya. Other pathways such as humanitarian, student, work and research visas could help reduce demand for smuggling and dangerous journeys, Human Rights Watch said.

For example, a recent news report alleges that trafficked workers are being hired by third party vendors operating concessions (such as fast food restaurants) on US military installations. In the European Union, corruption allegations surround a recent case where reportedly trafficked forestry workers were being used by companies operating under a Czech government contract.

In other cases, the victims are babies and children. The UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF, estimates that each year 1,000 to 1,500 Guatemalan babies are trafficked to North America and Europe for adoption. In July 2011, a major human trafficking network was broken up in China after Vietnamese gangs were found bringing children from Vietnam, some as young as 10 days old, into the country. In Yemen, organisations have documented the trafficking of Yemeni children into neighbouring Saudi Arabia (for sexual exploitation) and within the country (for forced work).
