Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (Marathi: डॊ.भीमराव रामजी आंबेडकर) (14 April 1891 — 6 December 1956), also known as Babasaheb, was an Indian nationalist, jurist, Dalit, political leader, activist, philosopher, thinker, anthropologist, historian, orator, prolific writer, economist, scholar, editor, revolutionary and the revivalist of Buddhism in India. He was also the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Born into a poor Untouchable family, Ambedkar spent his whole life fighting against social discrimination, the system of Chaturvarna — the Hindu categorization of human society into four varnas — and the Indian caste system. He is also credited with having sparked the Dalit Buddhist movement. Ambedkar has been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Arising Light is about the life of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956) and social welfare in India. Uplifting himself from the community of untouchables in India he educated himself in the West and became a national leader in India’s struggle for equality and justice.

HIMALAYA SMILES – An Appeal

>> THE JHUNI APPEAL <<

…and How You Can Help !

They give us their smiles – will you help give them light?

AN APPEAL FOR THE SMILING PEOPLE OF JHUNI

Jhuni lies at the edge of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, a UN-recognised biodiversity hotspot of international importance. While the villagers have traditionally used the forests and pastures of this high Himalayan range in sustainable ways, the past two decadeshave seen their increasing involvement with the cash economy of the plains.

The benefits– schooling and medical care – cost them money, and cash is hard to come by. The first result of this, twenty years ago, was the virtual extinction of the protected musk deer (its musk pod used by the European perfume industry) by poaching.

In the last ten years, local people have pursued an intensive hunt for Cordyseps sinensis (a strange caterpillar/fungus co-species) that occurs below ground in the high pastures and is valued by the Chinese for its supposedly aphrodisiac properties. The villagers’ presence in this fragile ecological zone, disturbing the thin soils and burning whatever bushes can be found to cook and keep warm with, has had serious environmental consequences. Needless to say over-harvesting has resulted in ever-diminishing returns, until today most Jhuni villagers say that it is no longer worth the effort. This leaves them with a final option to raise cash locally: growing cannabis. While this native plant has traditionally been used by them as a minor part of their diet and medicine, it is of course illegal, and brings them into contact with some of the least desirable elements of the plains economy. Every field planted with cannabis is a field less for food growing, and this inevitably increases the villages demand for edible wild speciesfrom the Reserve.

WHAT JHUNI NEEDS

solar electric light. The children’s schoolwork will benefit most from it, but everybody enjoys being able to see each other in the evening, don’t they?

smoke free stoves. Many health issues will be solved overnight from their introduction, plus who wants to cough the whole night?

alternative livelihoods. The legal ways to earn cash from harvesting wild animals and plants are now exhausted. No one in Jhuni actually likes the illegal ways – they’ll give them up at the drop of a hat if given the chance!

two SOLAR PANELS (or solar trees…) to run 2 laptop computers (the latter already donated), one at the school, the other in a room within the village. Although these computers will mainly be used for off-line learning through CD-ROM and videos, there are one or two places near the village where a weak mobile phone connection sometimes allows a slow connection to the internet. These computers will literally be an opening into a wider world.

Who are we? Avani is a fifteen-year old non-governmental organisation (NGO) specializing in bringing solar power to and developing textile production in remote villages of Uttarakhand. AVANI FOR A BETTER WORLD

Tibet is a land of dreams, of temples and Himalayan expeditions, of ancient cities and picturesque villages and the birthplace of many enlightened Buddhist Masters (Mahasiddhas). This ancientness nation has inherited and retained a wholesome culture and unique customs.

This land of cultural diversity and rich tradition is also one of the poorest regions in the world and for much of its population, daily life is difficult. More than half of the people live below the poverty line. The harsh cold climate in this mystic land adds to the suffering of the Tibetan communities.

NSCF is a charitable organisation that receives no governmental funding and relies solely based on the charitable contributions of donors from all over the world to assist us in our effort to shelter and educate those children and elderly in need.

Swami Balendu e.V. Kindergarten & Primary School

> FUTURE FOR KIDS <

> SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN <

The Swami Balendu e.V. Kindergarten and the Swami Balendu e.V. Primary School are right next to Swami Balendu’s Ashram Shree Bindu Sewa Sansthan in Vrindavan, North India. The building of school and Kindergarten was fully renovated in 2008. Now the children learn in bright and big rooms in a cheerful atmosphere.

The educational institutions of the Swami Balendu e.V. have been founded to support the education of poor children. The Kindergarten and the Primary school are frequented by children whose families live below the poverty line. Due to their very small income they cannot afford to send their children to school. Many of the parents go to work in the morning and with the salary of the same day they buy food for dinner. They do not have any savings to pay school fees and mostly do not have time or the knowledge to teach their children themselves.

In the Swami Balendu e.V. Kindergarten and the Primary School there are no school fees. The institutions are run by donations which make it possible that the children receive school uniforms, books, pens and daily a warm lunch. Parents can drop them in the morning before going to work and pick them up again in the afternoon, when returning back home.

In the Swami Balendu e.V. Kindergarten the children get to know the basics of reading and writing in a playful way. They get used to being in a group and sitting for a while like they will have to when they go to school. With the help of symbols and pictures they learn colours, forms, the names of animals and more. The youngest children are three years old.

At the age of six they can go to the first class of primary school. There they have Hindi classes as well as English lessons. In the higher classes they learn more about the history and the geography of India. Arts also find a place in the schedule and many children like these classes best: they paint, sing and even learn classical Indian dance. On special events like the independence day of India they can show what they have learned which is each time a wonderful performance.

As mentioned above, the Kindergarten and the primary school are run by donations. All children are supported by Shree Bindu Sewa Sansthan and many of them also have sponsors from all over the world. You, too, can sponsor a child and ensure his or her education for only 140 Euro per year.

You can also support our project by sponsoring the food for one or several days.

> MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT KABBALAH <

Kabbalah (Hebrew: קÖבÖÖלÖה‎, lit. „receiving“) is a discipline and school of thought concerned with the mystical aspect of Judaism. It is a set of esoteric teachings that is meant to explain the relationship between an infinite, eternal and essentially unknowable Creator with the finite and mortal universe of His creation. In solving this paradox, Kabbalah seeks to define the nature of the universe and the human being, the nature and purpose of existence, and various other ontological questions. It also presents methods to aid understanding of these concepts and to thereby attain spiritual realization. Kabbalah originally developed entirely within the realm of Jewish thought and constantly uses classical Jewish sources to explain and demonstrate its esoteric teachings. These teachings are thus held by kabbalists to define the inner meaning of both the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) and traditional rabbinic literature, as well as to explain the significance of Jewish religious observances.

Raising Malawi is a charity non-profit organisation, co-founded by Madonna and Michael Berg in 2006 in conjunction with the Kabbalah Centre Charitable Foundation. It is dedicated to helping with the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s one million orphans.

Mission statement

Since 2006, Raising Malawi has been dedicated to bringing an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi’s one million orphans. Co-founded by Madonna and Michael Berg, Raising Malawi uses a community-based approach to provide immediate direct physical assistance, create long-term sustainability, support education and psycho-social programs, and build public awareness through multimedia and worldwide volunteer efforts.

As a part of its activities, > Raising Malawi < works to distribute financial support that will help community-based organizations provide vulnerable children with nutritious food, proper clothing, secure shelter, formal education, targeted medical care, and emotional support. We do not create or manage our own programs in Malawi; rather we support dedicated people on the ground and in the villages, the ones closest to the realities that exist. We believe in empowering the smartest and most caring of those people, the ones who understand the challenges and the solutions.

By choosing to work at a community-based level, rather than trying to impose Western beliefs and methodologies on a different culture, real and lasting change is occurring in the lives of hundreds of thousands of impoverished children in Malawi.

Iyengar) (Born December 14, 1918 in Bellur, Kolar District, Karnataka, India) is the founder of Iyengar Yoga. He is considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world  and has been practicing and teaching yoga for more than 75 years. He has written many books on yogic practice and philosophy, and is best known for his books Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, and Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. He has also written several definitive yoga texts. Iyengar yoga centers are located throughout the world, and it is believed that millions of students practice Iyengar Yoga. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Bhushan in 2002. In 2004, Iyengar was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine.

The Bellur Krishnamachar and Seshamma Smaraka Niddhi Trust (BKSSNT) or the Bellur Trust is a charitable Trust formed by Guruji, his family and students, with the objective of undertaking educational, social, cultural and health related projects for the upliftment of the people of Bellur, a poor and backward village in southern India where Guruji, BKS Iyengar was born and lived as a young boy.

Guruji’s vision for Bellur is to establish the village as a model through the provision of educational, medical, social and cultural facilities and opportunities to raise and enhance the general quality of life and improve future prospects for the young in the community.

It is hoped from this firm foundation that lasting social and economic reform can be achieved. Guruji’s father had been a school teacher and taught at a school in a nearby village as there was no school in Bellur until Guruji in 1967 built a primary school with the help from money raised by English students.

In the past several years a further level has been added to the existing primary school providing a large space for yoga classes A 50,000 gallon water tank has been erected to provide fresh clean drinking water to the village A fully staffed, equipped High School (Smt. Ramamani Sundararaja Iyengar High School) has been built with the villagers sending their children to enroll at 8th grade School fees for the students have been waived and a system of free education established for those who come from under privileged homes.

  • School uniforms have been provided free to all students as well as books and stationery
  • A kitchen has been established to provide a free mid day meal
  • The necessary infrastructure of boundary fences, power supply and road access has been established
  • A Day Hospital providing for the health of the villagers has been built, equipped and staffed
  • A Guest House to provide accommodation for visitors to Bellur.
  • Restoration and building of the world’s first Sage Patanjali temple (pdf).

The future plans are as ambitious as those already completed and will need ongoing support from the Iyengar community and a very large amount of funding to see their completion and maintenance. The benefits to the village of Bellur have been enormous and the future plans will benefit the whole locality around Bellur.

Guruji has asked his students world wide to launch fund raising initiatives to help raise the significant amounts of money to further the already successful projects which the Trust has embarked upon. You can donate individually or you can organize a group project. For further information about the Trust and its work and to download the donation form go to  www.bksiyengar.com .

San Damiano Foundation & Village to Village

St. Francis of Assisi St. Claire of Assisi

SAN DAMIANO FOUNDATION

VILLAGE TO VILLAGE PROJECT

HOW YOU CAN HELP

St. Clare had a way of expressing the transforming power of contemplative prayer: “ Place your mind before the mirror of eternity! Place your soul in the brilliance of glory! And transform your entire being into the image of the Godhead Itself through contemplation”. – Pastor’s Message from St Clare of Assisi Catholic Parish

Mission Statement – The mission of The San Damiano Foundation is to communicate through films the spirituality of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi. The church of San Damiano in Assisi, Italy, is the birthplace of the Franciscan movement. In that small, dilapidated church, St. Francis heard the voice of Christ speak to him from a painted Byzantine cross telling him to rebuild the Church. It was a moment of transformation for the future saint. The San Damiano Foundation desires to help inspire similar transformation within individuals, within the Church and within our society.

San Damiano utube Channel

The San Damiano Foundation recognizes the power of film to touch and inspire people, making it a perfect medium to communicate Franciscan spirituality and concern for the poor, social justice, peace and nonviolence.

The films produced by the Foundation will explore the active and contemplative dimensions of Franciscan spirituality. They will either illustrate St. Francis’ love of the poor by showcasing the work Franciscans and other Christians are doing with the poor around the world or enter the heart of contemplative prayer as embodied by St. Clare. Some films will be produced for broadcast on public and commercial television stations; some will be geared for distribution to churches and schools.

The San Damiano Foundation recognizes the power of film to touch and inspire people, making it a perfect medium to communicate Franciscan spirituality and concern for the poor, social justice, peace and nonviolence. The vision for our films is twofold: to raise funds for Christian charities aiding the world’s poor, and to awaken the hearts and minds to the plight of the poor, hopefully inspiring viewers to serve those in need through acts of compassion and mercy.

Africa’s Medicine:The healing methods and medicine developed in Africa differs in many aspects from western medicine. Western medicine is technically and analytically based, while the traditional African medicine takes a holistic approach.

It is believed that good health, disease, success or misfortune are not chance occurrences but arise from the actions of individuals and ancestral spirits according to the balance or imbalance between the individual and the social environment.

Traditionally, every rural African community would have a traditional medical practitioner, to which they would go for advice on a number of issues, including health-problems. These traditional “doctors” have an invaluable botanical knowledge of plant species and their ecology and scarcity.

The community would rely upon this knowledge, as well as the spiritual and practical skills of the traditional healer, since they themselves were not allowed to gain this knowledge.

This is because throughout Africa the gathering of medicinal plants was traditionally restricted to traditional healers or their trainees through spiritual calling, ritual, religious controls and, in Southern Africa, the use of alternative (hlonipha) names not known to outsiders.

Traditional healers use plants in a variety of ways, depending on the illness to be cured. Parts of plants can be applied directly to wounds and cuts or, if necessary, prepared as powders that are used like snuff. Sometimes plants are even used in the form of smoke or fumes, or as infusions.

Village2Village Project Mission – To provide comprehensive, empowering, respectful and compassionate care for vulnerable children and their families, one life at a time.

Our Priority: Children who have at least one parent affected by HIV/AIDS or violence, and their families.

Our Location: Serere, Uganda; a county of rural villages in Soroti district, in the Teso region of northeastern Uganda. In time we may expand to serve those in need in a variety of locations both inside and outside of Uganda.

There’s nothing wrong with my verbal skills. It only seems that way because my math skills are so high. -Dilbert

Personal Information:

My name is Anand Jayaraman. I got my PhD in Physics from University of Pittsburgh. I have held research positions at Duke University and Penn State University. I was associated with the Pritchard Fluid Mechanics lab when I was at Penn State; while at Duke I held positions at both the Mathematics and the Physics departments. I currently live in the beautiful city of Seattle, Washington.

I am from India. I come from Trichy district in Tamilnadu. I did my B.tech in Engineering Physics at Bombay, India at the Indian Institute of Technology.

Research Interests: Finance, Physics and Mathematics. In particular the application of mathematics in solving variety of problems. The „unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in solving physical problems“ amazes me ( I am, of course stealing Eugene wigner’s quote ). My thesis research involved using the techniques of nonlinear dynamics in analyzing the Vlasov equation. My research interests include non-newotnian fluid dynamics, pattern formation thin-film dynamics and spatiotemporal chaos. Currently, my research efforts have been directed towards financial applications; specifically the presence of non-random behavior in commodities and stock prices has really intrigued me. Does presence of non-random behavior automatically imply existence of stratergies that „beat the market“? Is there a ‚chaotic‘ component to the price movements?

„Yantras are beautiful art, the original Vedic sacred geometry. These cosmic diagrams generate nourishing, life-supporting energies. Yantras embody the energy of particular sacred archetypal energies, such as deities and planets or grahas of > Vedic astrology (Jyotish) < . Yantras are especially useful in buildings that were not Vastu-designed. They protect from negative, disruptive energies in the environment. The directions, elements, and planets exert powerful vibratory effects on our bodies, minds, and emotions. Yantras help us have the support of nature rather than resistance from nature. There are mantras, or sacred sound vibrations, associated with most yantras. There are both two- and three-dimensional yantras. I have been studying them for years and offer yantras and a 25-page yantra guidebook on my website.“

Sherri Silverman, „Ph.D., author, > Vastu < : Transcendental Home Design in Harmony with Nature“

This book details all kinds of historical Yantras as revealed in various Vedas (historic Hindu scriptures). Yantras are cosmic machines which directs energies to the human body/mind to attain various psychic states. The author dwells deeply in to the philosophy behind it, which in essence is Hinduism. Understanding the Hindu concept of the world, the cosmos and the human being is the key to unlocking the power of Yantra. A reader who is not exposed to Eastern religious philosophies will find it difficult to comprehend the description of concepts behind the Yantra.

This book has many illustrations of historic Yantras and details of the significance of its geometric drawings. I liked this book for the depth of analysis and the description of underlying concepts. Please note that this is NOT an instruction work book on Yantras which details about how to make a Yantra.

One disappointing fact is that the author uses little space to describe Occult Yantras which are commonly used by ordinary people for protection, healing and power. The Sri Yantra, which enables a person to attain higher states is described in detail. Overall this book gave me indepth knowledge about the working of a Yantra – the energized cosmic machine.

KARUNA DANA – SCHOOL FOR TIBET

Karuna Dana

www.karunadana.org

KARUNA DANA is an organisation for cooperation and development

aimed at protecting people’s cultural identity and improving their living

conditions through the promotion of development

KARUNA DANA was created for the purpose of bringing resources to those poor people who fight for a future so they can live with human dignity and without loosing their cultural heritage.

We are registered with Spanish National non Governmental Agencies Register holding 169.122 number as well as with the Spanish National non Governmental Agencies Register for international Cooperation.

>> THE SCHOOL <<

At KARUNA DANA we believe that the only possible future for people who look toward progress without fear must be based on their own cultural heritage. That is why transmitting that heritage is of vital importance.

Currently our main project in being implemented in the area of KHAM: a school where 325 Tibetan children can attend classes.

Illiteracy rates are very high in this region due to the poverty of farming families who scarcely find resources for their own survival.

Our goal is to help children from KHAM gain access to basic education, and to do it in their language: Tibetan.

At KARUNA DANA we have established two activity branches for this project:

  1. Sustaining the total ordinary expenses of the school. Lack of monetary resources is seriously threatening the continuity of the school.
  2. Building new infrastructures with the objective of converting the school into a boarding school able to host 800 children. If we reach this figure, we will be providing schooling to the majority of children in the region.

The building of new facilities where pupils, teachers and workers can live is of vital importance to the schooling of these children. Living in an agricultural area, most of the children have to spend two-three hours per day commuting. In winter, ice and snow make it very difficult for them.

The project includes the building of at least two sites for bedrooms, canteens and classrooms for children and another for teachers and staff.

WORLD MONUMENT FUND

Perched atop the  > Andean peak < bearing its name, in clouds high above the Urubamba Valley, Machu Picchu overlooks the Vilcanota River. Construction of this majestic complex concluded at the height of Incan civilization in the 15th century, during the reign of Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui and his descendants. Though abandoned within 100 years of completion, even after the fall of the Incan Empire, the site offered protection for rebel forces fighting for Peruvian independence, eventually attained in 1821. Since 1911, when Hiram Bingham of Yale University first arrived at the site at the invitation of the Peruvian government, the fascination with Machu Picchu has spread around the globe. It endures as one of the most important and recognized archaeological landscapes in the world.

While the seamless stone masonry of the agricultural terraces and structures has stood strong through the ravages of time, war, and earthquakes, the vulnerability of Machu Picchu and its environs should not be underestimated. Steady and significant increases in visitation at the site have prompted development and urbanization in nearby areas to meet the growing tourism needs. Balancing infrastructure and service requirements with the preservation of this cultural icon remains a constant struggle at Machu Picchu. The call for integrated and sustainable management strategies for the site and the surrounding communities has been echoed for over a decade, but planned, collective action has yet to be achieved.

WHAT IS GOPIO?

The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) welcomes you to GOPIO’s international network of people of Indian origin (PIO). GOPIO was founded at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York in 1989. The initial thrust of GOPIO was fighting human rights violation of people of Indian origin. Although this has been improved in the last one decade, human rights violations continue to be a major issue for PIOs living outside India. GOPIO has now set its priorities in pooling our resources, both financial and professional, for the benefit of PIOs, the countries they come from and India. Toward this goal we welcome you to join in this international effort.
